Job Description

PV Pros seeks a leader with experience developing, implementing, and running the operations of a growing O&M and Engineering firm. The candidate will be responsible for all the company’s field services, which includes: acquisition due diligence, QC inspections, construction oversight, commissioning, repairs, preventative maintenance, removals & re-installations. The candidate will be a subject matter expert with a wide range of experience and understanding in the design, installation, and operation of commercial and utility scale solar PV systems. This position offers tremendous opportunity for growth and advancement as the business expands.

The position is based in the company’s office headquarters in Hoboken NJ, but we will consider exceptional candidates that are too far for daily commute but close enough to make the trip once a week.


Oversee all field service activities for PV Pros’ O&M and Independent Engineering services. Responsibilities include the following:

  1. General
    1. Responsible for maximizing revenue, profit and growth for the field service department.
    2. Oversee all major operating functions of the field service department.
    3. Develop the strategic business plan, budget, and long-range vision of the field service department.
    4. Ensure that everyone is following and adhering to the company’s business processes.
    5. Demonstrates effective project management skills.
    6. Be the primary interface with engineering, finance, and business development teams.
  2. Technical Subject Matter Expert (SME)
    1. Elevate the technical capabilities of the organization.
    2. Take the lead on solving the challenges the field techs are not able to solve.
    3. Develop and maintain a centralized knowledge base the technicians and engineers can use to troubleshoot issues.
    4. Lead root cause analysis to determine why component failures occur and develop solutions to underlying issues.
    5. Develop methods and tools for troubleshooting equipment and testing equipment’s operation and performance.
    6. Develop training programs such as best practices, troubleshooting procedures, and equipment use.
    7. Work with PVP’s senior leadership to tackle the company’s most pressing technical challenges.
    8. Mastery of the National Electrical Code as applicable to solar and energy storage systems.
    9. Technology evaluation and risk assessment.
    10. Author white papers and blog articles for the website.
    11. Represent PV Pros as a speaker at trade shows and events.
  3. Management of Field Service teams
    1. Oversee all personnel of the field service department.
    2. Development of crews in additional territories as the company’s footprint expands.
    3. Provide technical and troubleshooting assistance to field service technicians (usually remotely from the office, occasionally on site).
    4. Lead subcontractor process through development of scopes, bidding process and subcontractor awards and contract activities.
    5. Recruiting – Recruiting, interviewing, selecting, onboarding, coaching, counseling, and disciplining staff.
  4. Construction Management – Repairs may be as large such as removal & re-installation or re-powering a site by replacing a central inverter with string inverters.
    1. Plan, budget, manage and complete large repair projects.
    2. Support value engineering to reduce costs in labor, materials and equipment.
    3. Coordinate design and permitting activities with engineering team and local authorities.
    4. Determine appropriate schedule for material buyouts and coordinate purchases and logistics.
    5. Coordinate all construction activities with field personnel and subcontractors.
    6. Lead subcontractor process through development of scopes, bidding process and subcontractor awards and contract activities.
    7. At project close out, ensure all deliverables have been met, documentation has been archived and review lessons learned.
    8. Deliver projects within the established schedule. Lead efforts to reduce project duration without sacrificing other outcomes.
    9. Actively participate in reviews of actual versus estimated costs to provide feedback and meet cost reduction goals.
    10. Conduct regularly scheduled meetings with project managers, assistant project managers and other team members to review general work progress, accomplishments and areas for improvement.
  5. Management & Leadership
    1. Train, motivate, and manage performance to create a high-achieving team
    2. Leads, manages, and holds the leadership team accountable for achieving agreed-upon commitments.
    3. Resolves issues effectively — seeing real problems, being comfortable with conflict, calling out the problems, and solving the problems in a practical and healthy manner. Ensures the leadership team is healthy, functional, and cohesive.
    4. Developing a climate for offering information and expressing differing opinions.
    5. Play a leadership role in implementing improvements in services: review operating results of the department, compare them to established objectives, and develop plans to ensure continuous improvement in all functions. When necessary, take steps to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to correct unsatisfactory results.
  6. Procedures & Standardization
    1. Work with office and field staff to standardize procedures for solving issues encountered in the field.
    2. Create standardized forms the techs will use in the field. Create methods to digitize all forms, so that they can be quickly turned into a deliverable report.
    3. Develop tool and testing equipment standards, including which tools/ testing equipment the company should standardize on, how to use the tools, which tools should be present in all vans, and which should be shared among techs.
    4. Develop the list of parts and materials that should be kept on each van to allow for quick repair of the most common issues found in the field. For parts not kept in the service vans, identify which should be stocked in our central warehouse vs purchasing on an as-needed basis from a vendor.
  7. Safety Plan
    1. Lead regular safety meetings.
    2. Lead the development of the company’s safety policies, particularly how to safety work on electrical equipment and use testing equipment in accordance with OSHA.
    3. Work towards making PV Pros a NETA accredited company, as well as personal NETA certifications.
    4. Ensure every employee has received all required PPE.
    5. Ensure every employee has received all required safety training.
  8. Business Development
    1. Reviewing technical specifications & SOW
    2. Estimating man-hours and materials, quotes, and proposed schedules.
    3. Analyze historical data to more accurately estimate budgets for new work

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years’ experience in the solar PV industry (preferably with an EPC firm)
  • 10+ years’ experience in electrical contracting or solar construction.
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs, lift 50 pounds, and must be able to work on your feet for long periods of time
  • Able to take highly technical issues and communicate them in a manner that can be understood by non-technical clients

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Master Electrician or Journeyman card
  • NABCEP PV Installation Professional Certificate
  • OSHA 30 for Construction Certificate
  • Formal training certificate or degree in electrical field

PV Pros is in the exciting downtown area of Hoboken NJ, a one-minute walk from the Hoboken train station.  We also provide a private parking spot for those that wish to drive to the office. Ideally the candidate is within range of commuting to Hoboken each day.  We will consider exceptional candidates that are too far for daily commute but close enough to make the trip once a week.
